new Macon Open Statement
Mercer University’s McEachern Art Center is proud to present the first edition of the New Macon Open. This exhibition is a recognition of the talent and energy in Macon’s creative community. It is built on an un-juried open call to artists in Macon designed to celebrate their work. It is inspired by the open model of athletic tournaments which look to talent, rather than status, for participation. In this spirit we are happy to welcome all of the artistic treasures of our community at the MAC.
The artists represented here include folks of all ages and phases of their careers. The thing that ties this admittedly eclectic group together is a deep love of art. The root of amateur is love (amator), and that is vividly displayed in this exhibition. I see the kind of love that has people up early (and late) creating the things that they were made to make here. The work is inspired and inspiring.
The exhibition was designed as a series of celebrations and gatherings which were stymied due to the pandemic this summer. We have pivoted to present the work in our windows, online, and through appointment in order to continue serving the creative needs in our community. The artists you see below have been patient, persistent, and adaptable in the face of these uncertainties. The many re-imaginings of this exhibition over the summer were undertaken by a small team. Notably, Jason Xie and Julia Rubens deserve medals for their efforts.

The MAC always encourages collecting by offering affordably priced works of art. The price of art is considerably less expensive at our gallery due to a 0% commission policy. Though less expensive to you, 100% of the proceeds of all sales go to the artists. This win-win means artists can afford to sell their work for what they actually want to get paid, without a markup. Our aim in this is to empower artists and encourage collectors.
