Join us for an interactive fiber workshop led by visiting artist Kandy Lopez. As an afro Caribbean American female, there weren't many examples of possible career paths. Lopez didn't have a mentor that looked like her, but was fortunate to have parents that supported her artistic drive and teachers that saw the determination in her work. She became a teacher to become a mentor; to be an example of otherness in a career path which lacks representation to people of color. Not only is it important for her career to exhibit work, but also foster an educational component within communities. This workshop will allow visitors to not only see her work in the exhibition Vaivén opening on February 7th, but to also interact with the artist and explore her creative process within textiles.
This workshop will focus on imagery and experimentation of materials. We will be using plastic canvas and thread, and it does not need to be figurative. Lopez has been teaching for 15+ years now, and it’s important to keep a few parameters open for self/artistic discovery.
Please Note:
Open to all skill levels, but recommended for teens and adults.
